Dr Andrew Muir
1955-2007

Dr Andrew Muir, 52, committed Doctor, talented musician, Cordon Bleu chef and expert linguist, died following a heart attack on Friday 26th January. He will be very much missed.

Andy, an Honorary Senior Research Fellow and 1977 Dundee medical graduate, was known and loved throughout the Tayside and Fife Medical community and beyond. His career and expertise spanned A&E, orthopaedics, primary care, medical research, rheumatology, and latterly Vascular Medicine. In the course of his work he came into contact with many different professionals and patients, and became renowned for his attention to detail, his diagnostic skills and his reliability.

His Medical Research made him an International figure with presentations at learned scientific meetings around the world, most latterly in Lisbon at the World Congress of Angiology. Many tributes are coming in from colleagues around the world, with their recollections of his enthusiasm for life long learning, his pleasure in facts, and his enjoyment of the local cultures. A further testament to the regard in which he was held was the number of personal staff consultations made to Andy. His good sense, hard work (with occasional grumpiness alleviated by a quirky sense of self mockery) did much to endear him to everyone he worked with.

Andy was more than just the conscientious, hard worker and dedicated professional. He was a true performer - delighting all playing electric guitar, clarinet and piano. His after hours 'jamming' sessions were legendry. His wonderful dinners were testament to his culinary skills. Fluent in French, Spanish and learning Italian, he was an avid watcher of Satellite TV from foreign lands. His last read was on the architectural magnificence of Gaudi…in Spanish, underpinning his linguistic talents and interest in Civilisations and Cultures worldwide. Andy loved life, attending the gym and Scuba diving with friends, when work permitted.

Andy will be remembered as a wonderful husband to his wife, Cathy, and father to Andrew, Colin and Victoria.

He will be sorely missed by us all. He was truly a Doctor's Doctor, a man for everyone.

Diane Lynas
1949-2007

Diane graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1970 with a degree in English Literature and Sociology. She initially pursued an administration and marketing career with IBM which took her to Toronto, Paris, Warwick and London. Her first job with the University of Dundee in 1996 was to assist in establishing the collaborative MSc in Primary Care with the Postgraduate Unit of Tayside Centre for General Practice. In 2001 she joined DHSRU as a Project Coordinator for a major Scotland wide research study in dental primary care where her negotiation skills proved to be an asset. Diane's great strengths lay in her ability to evaluate complexities in a logical and in-depth manner in order to provide practical, workable solutions wherever possible.

Diane had a wonderful wry sense of humour and was a genuinely kind and caring person who will be sorely missed by her many friends and colleagues. She is survived by her son Jamie who she said made her smile and brought joy into her life.
