Competition in Energy Markets
Second edition
Law and Regulation in the European Union
Peter D. Cameron
The new edition of this book gives a comprehensive update and analysis of European law as it affects competition in EU energy markets, especially oil, gas and electricity. This includes all relevant directives, regulations, Treaty provisions (including the energy chapter in the draft EU Constitution), case law and decisions of the ECJ, the CFI and the European Commission competition authorities. Appropriate consideration is also given to the new developments in EU legal relations with Norway, Switzerland and other neighbouring countries.
The growing impact of environmental rules on the energy sector and competition law instruments and the enhanced role of the national energy regulatory authorities and the European Competition Network are also discussed. The approach is primarily analytical and practical.
Peter D. Cameron is a Professor of International Energy Law and Policy at the University of Dundee Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP).
Aquatic Photosynthesis (Second Edition)
Paul Falkowski and John Raven
Princeton University Press
Photosynthesis began in the sea and marine organisms carry out half of global photosynthesis today. This book provides a comprehensive guide to understanding the ecology and evolution of photosynthesis in aquatic environments, aimed at researchers, teachers and advanced students.
The first edition of Aquatic Photosynthesis was published in 1997, covering the physical and chemical bases of photosynthesis, and the biophysical, biochemical, molecular biological and physiological aspects of the subject. It also dealt with evolution of photosynthetic organisms and their roles in ecology and in biogeochemical cycles.
Increases in our understanding of the molecular, including structural, biology of photosynthesis, and the evolutionary and biogeochemical implications of the process have been included in this second edition.
John Raven is Boyd Baxter Professor of Biology in Division of Environmental and Applied Biology in the College of Life Sciences. Paul Falkowski is Board of Governors Professor in Environmental Biophysics and Molecular Ecology in the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences and the Department of Geological Sciences at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Applied Nonparametric Statistical Methods
Fourth Edition
Peter Sprent and Nigel C Smeeton
Chapman & Hall/CRC
Nonparametric Methods are a rapidly expanding area in statistical science. The first edition of this book appeared in 1989 and many developments in both theoretical and computational aspects led to revised and expanded editions in 1993 and 2001. This latest edition has four additional chapters and is more than twice the length of the first edition. The book is widely recognised as one of the leading introductory texts and basic reference works in its field.
Peter Sprent and Nigel Smeeton expanded the first edition to include topics important to medical and dental research in the third edition. Coverage of some of these topics has been further extended in the latest version, and new methodologies of wider applicability are treated for the first time in any textbook at this elementary level.
As well as a textbook, the new edition is designed as an authoritative reference work for research workers in other disciplines who often find a need to use nonparametric methods that may be unfamiliar to them.
Peter Sprent is an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Dundee.
Using Evidence: How research can inform public services
Sandra M. Nutly, Isabel Walter, Huw T.O. Davies
Policy Press
This book provides a timely and novel contribution to understanding and enhancing evidence use. It builds on and complements the popular and best-selling What Works?: Evidence-based policy and practice in public services (Davies, Nutley and Smith, Policy Press, 2000), by drawing together current knowledge about how research gets used and how this can be encouraged and improved.
Using evidence is important reading for university and government researchers, research funding bodies, public service managers and professionals, and students of public policy and management. It will also prove an invaluable guide for anyone involved in the implementation of evidence-based policy and practice.
Sandra Nutley is Professor of Public Policy and Management and Director of the Research Unit for Research Utilisation (RURU), University of Edinburgh.
Isabel Walter is Research Fellow in the Social Dimensions of Health institute, Universities of St Andrews and Dundee.
Huw Davies is Professor of Health Policy and Management, University of St Andrews, and Director of the Social Dimensions of Health institute, Universities of St Andrews and Dundee.
Scotland: The making and unmaking of the nation
Dundee University Press
As events to mark the 300th anniversary of the Union continue, Dundee University Press has published the history of Scotland in the years before the Union.
In five volumes, leading historians have contributed essays on their area of expertise from the years 1100 to the eve of Union in 1707. The work has been edited by a team led by the University's Dr Alan MacDonald.
The first two volumes contain specially-commissioned essays, covering a range of political, social, religious and cultural history written by leading historians from across globe. Volumes three and four contain republished seminal articles, nominated by the contributors to provide deeper and broader coverage for anyone who is studying the history of medieval and early modern Scotland. Volume five is a collection of original documents.
As well as covering the more traditional topics of politics and religion, this book includes fascinating first-hand descriptions of towns as well as documents on architecture, art, archaeology, music and literature.
