Dundee's Art History in Focus
The history of Dundee comics and pioneering Dundee art collectors such as William Boyd, who sold a Van Gogh to endow the Chair of Dentistry at University College Dundee, are two of the topics featured in a special Dundee-focused edition of the Scottish Society for Art History annual journal.
Considered to be one of the leading art historical publications in Scotland, a number of University academics have contributed to this special edition.
Curator of Museum Services Matthew Jarron guest edited the publication which includes contributions from several University staff and researchers including Murdo Macdonald, Euan McArthur, Chris Murray and Sandra McNeil.
The journal covers a range of subjects including recent research on significant artists such as John Duncan and George Dutch Davidson, the history of Dundee comics, the city's extraordinary blockbuster art exhibitions of the 1870s, and pioneering Dundee art collectors such as William Boyd.
As well as the academic papers, the journal also features shorter case studies on current art historical work in the city, including the REWIND project to document early British video art by Steve Partridge, the digitisation of the Demarco Archive by Matt Davis and the conservation of John Linnell drawings from the University Museum Collections by staff at the Book & Paper Conservation Studio.
The journal can be purchased from Museum Service for £12. Call 01382 384310 for details.
