Dundee Civic Award for shop front security design
A third year student from the School of Town and Regional Planning has won the Dundee Civic Award.
Stewart McNally won the top award in the competition organised by Dundee City Council Planning and Transportation Department by undertaking a project based on planning issues Dundee City Council Planning and Transportation Department are currently considering.
Stewart presented ideas for the Dundee city centre on Roller Shutters and Shop Security.
His entry was considered best because he had looked at the importance of design as well as providing security for city centre shops with particular reference to the city centre as a Conservation Area and the listed buildings that are in and around the City Centre. Stewart made three recommendations for suitable shop front security - reinforced glass, internal or external mesh shutters.
Stewart said, "I have really enjoyed this project because it has been based around local issues. Coursework is always more enjoyable when it involves a real life planning scenario. This project has gone even further. We have had the opportunity to meet and work with various members of the local planning team and, moreover, possibly influence what actually happens in the real world. I am absolutely thrilled that I won the Civic award and I think it will be a great thing to put down on my CV."
Mike Galloway, Director of Planning and Transportation, said, "The Dundee Civic prize for Town planning has been existence for well over 30 years now and it is an important link between the Council and the University of Dundee in terms of the academic and practical aspects of planning in the City. The City council values this link and will seek to give it continued support in the future."
"Stewart's project was considered the best because it was a very practical and easily implemented piece of work."
Stewart was presented with a cheque for £140, while runners-up Robert McIntosh and Gregor Spence got £80 each.
