Schoolchildren dip into DNA
Schoolchildren from Blackness and Forthill primary schools in Dundee have held an exhibition at the Sensation science centre that is very much about themselves.
'The Scientific Art of Identity' was the culmination of a five-day workshop in which the schoolchildren used a mix of art and science to focus on who we are and what we look like.
The project was developed by internationally recognised artist Paul Goodrick, in association with the Centre for Professional Development at Duncan of Jordanstone College.
Working alongside Paul with the schoolchildren and their teachers were Angela Molloy, an artist/teacher, and Sue Parsons, a science teacher, both from Kent.
During the workshops the children explored some of the many different things that give them identity, and looked closely at DNA structures and how these can be used to create self-portrait sculptures.
The project was funded by a Pulse award from The Wellcome Trust, an initiative which aims to develop new ways of exploring science and engaging young people with complex and often emotive scientific issues.
It is hoped that a teaching pack will also be produced from the week's activities, for distribution to schools throughout Scotland.
