Professor Peter Kitson of the Department of English has been chosen as one of the panel judges
to award the prestigious Keats Shelley Prize in 2005. Other judges are the poets Matthew Sweeney
and John Hartley-Williams, and the literary critic Dr Seamus Perry.

A Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP) Level 1 Communication
Tactics course will be held in the summer vacation.
CACDP promotes communication between deaf and hearing people, by offering nationally recognised
assessments.

patients
The Simulated Patient Programme at the School of Medicine is looking for individuals or groups
who are interested in volunteering as 'patients' for trainee doctors, nurses and dentists.
Currently the majority of simulated patients are retired. To provide a more representational mix,
younger people and individuals from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds are particularly
invited to become involved.
Sessions run at various times of the year and last about two hours. An honorarium plus
travelling expenses are paid to volunteers.

exhibition
'Time Lines' an exhibition of work by students on the 'Continuing as a Writer' course, run by
the Department of Continuing Education is being held in the Tower Building from 31 May to 30 June.
The students visited the Archives Department and drew inspiration from the objects they found
there. The writing they produced and the objects which inspired it will be on display.
honours
Charles Munn, Honorary Professor in the Department of Accountancy and Business Finance was
awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours List for Services to Banking.
He will receive his award at Holyrood Palace in July.
lecture
Prize winner Sir John Sulston, one of the UK's most distinguished scientists, delivered the
Peter Garland Lecture in the School of Life Sciences.
The Peter Garland Lecture is the School of Life Sciences' most prestigious lecture and seven of the
last nineteen annual speakers have been Nobel Prize winners. Peter Garland became the first
Professor of Biochemistry in Dundee in 1970 and over the next 14 years built the School of Life
Sciences up into one of the strongest in the UK.

The Faculty of Education and Social Work is hosting its inaugural academic professional development
day, which is open to all staff across the University who are involved in teaching and supporting
learning. The one-day event will focus on developing, supporting and assessing reflective practice
at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

A photograph of Professor Elizabeth Wilson which appeared on the back of the March issue of
Contact magazine stated that she works at the School of Nursing and Midwifery. This was an error;
she is the Director of Nursing, NHS Tayside Primary Care Division.
