Artworks for law library
The University Museum Services have just completed the hanging of a series of artworks in the
Law Library, Scrymgeour Building. The walls of the newly-redecorated Lower Reading Room have now
been adorned with ten portraits from the University’s fine art collections.
Two of the subjects are from the law profession. Lord Trayner was one of the original governors of
University College Dundee, and in 1885 was elevated to the judicial bench as a Lord of Session.
James McIntosh was Auditor to the Court of Session 1894-1910, and was the great-uncle of the
painter James McIntosh Patrick, who donated the painting to the university.
The other works include Henry Lintott's portrait of J A Ewing, the University's first Professor of
Engineering, and Sir James Gunn's fine painting of Lieut-Col S J L Hardie, whose generous donations
allowed the construction of Belmont Hall of Residence. His portrait hung in the hall’s main
stairway until the recent demolition of part of the site.
Law Librarian David Hart said, "There is something very satisfying about seeing someone studying
beneath a 19th century painting, using 20th century legal textbooks alongside 21st century legal
databases. It captures what the Law Library strives to achieve, combining the best of the old with
the best of the new to provide a high-quality study environment."
During the University semester the Law Library is open 09.00 - 22.00 Monday to Friday, 12.00 -
17.00 Saturday, 12.00 - 19.00 Sunday.
