History lecture goes back to the 60's
The first annual history lecture for schools, which took the theme 'The 1960s - was it all sex,
drugs and rock 'n' roll', provided a perfect opportunity for two new professors in the Department of
History to show off their expertise.
Professors Jim Tomlinson and Callum Brown, together with Dr Zoe Colley, entertained an audience of
staff and senior pupils from local schools, with a collaborative lecture on the era that brought a
seismic shift in British morals and values. Covering the modernisation implemented by the
governments of the time, civil rights and protest movements in America, and the changes to sexual
behaviour, morality and the media, the lecture also included a quiz about the key facts and figures
from the 60's.
History lecturer John Regan said, "The response from students and staff alike was very positive
this year and the History Department hopes to build on this success.
The annual lecture provides invaluable opportunities to build contacts with schools and
potential students, and provides many school pupils with their first ever experience of
university."
