Exhibition commemorates local engineer
A new permanent exhibition to commemorate the work of renowned Dundee architect and engineer
James Thomson is now on display in the Fulton building.
Thomson was a major influence in the development of Dundee through his work as City Architect,
1904-1924, and City Engineer, 1906-1922. His best known projects include the Kingsway, the Caird
Hall and a number of libraries across the city.
Organised by Professor Alan Vardy, the exhibition consists of a portrait of Thomson by his
contemporary the artist Henry Wright Kerr, and a series of print reproductions of the design work
he created for the city - including his elaborate vision for the city's waterfront area.
The portrait is on indefinite loan from Dundee's McManus Galleries.
Alan explains, "I wanted to stage this exhibition as a tribute to the great work that James Thomson
carried out in his lifetime, which I believe makes him one of the most far-sighted town planners
that Britain has ever had. The work on display is thought-provoking and it should inspire our
students when they walk past it on their way to classes."
