Award for nursing research
Staff from the School of Nursing and Midwifery have been awarded two out of the three Marjory
Simpson awards made to new researchers each year. Susan Redman and Fiona Bell, the recipients of
the two awards, presented papers at the Royal College of Nursing annual international research
conference in Belfast.
The Marjory Simpson awards are presented annually to new researchers, in collaboration with
Blackwell publishing and The Journal of Advanced Nursing. The award is open to new nurse
researchers who are undertaking a postgraduate course of study, are members of the RCN research
society, and who hope to attend the conference.
Fiona, a full-time PhD student, presented a paper on her current research into the role of practice
nursing in the changing context of health care. Susan, a lecturer and part time PhD student,
presented two papers on her research into the cultural context of the use of smacking in parental
discipline, and the beliefs, attitudes and practice of health care professionals who work with
families in community settings.
