Principal speaks at Discovery business breakfast
The First City of Discovery Business Breakfast lecture of 2005 was delivered by Principal Sir
Alan Langlands, who spoke to a capacity audience drawn from Dundee’s business, education and media
communities.
Entitled ‘The Business of Higher Education - Inspiration and Discovery', the Principal's talk was a
wide-ranging exploration of the role of higher education institutions in generating economic and
cultural capital and tackling social issues. In particular he focused on the University's role in
the regeneration of Dundee from a post-industrial city to a thriving centre of excellence in life
sciences, medical research and digital media.
After paying tribute to the work of Dundee City Council in education, social work and business
generation, he concluded by laying down three challenges to the audience. Sir Alan said, "We need
to build on the economic, social and cultural achievements of the City. At a practical level the
business community should get behind the creative media district at Seabraes Yard, support the City
Council in celebrating the success of our schools and in tackling problems of underachievement and
build on the success of DCA, the Rep, Sensation and the Space, ensuring that Dundee welcomes new
writers, poets, artists and musicians. We must continue to look upward, forward and outwards."
