Lord Sainsbury addresses inaugural alumni conference
Lord Sainsbury of Turville was just one of the distinguished speakers at the Faculty of
Engineering & Physical Sciences’ alumni conference. The event, entitled 'Engineering Your Future'
was the first alumni conference to be held at the University.
With a keynote speech from Lord Sainsbury, Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Trade and
Industry for Science and Innovation, and contributions from eminent graduates of the faculty
including, Sir George Mathewson of the Royal Bank of Scotland, Kris van der Kuyl, of VIS, and Neil
Wilson, of Datalex, the conference offered graduates an opportunity to network with high-profile
figures from their industry.
Janet Hughes of the Division of Applied Computing, who collaborated with colleagues in External
Relations to organise the event said, "Younger graduates who are making an impact in their chosen
fields also made contributions to the day’s proceedings. All of this, combined with information on
current research and the direction of the faculty, made for a useful and informative conference for
everyone who attended."
Dianne Pemberton-Pigott, Head of Alumni Relations, said, "We were delighted so many of our alumni
agreed to speak at the conference. We intend to organise more conferences that will enable
alumni from different faculties to re-connect with their University and benefit from the
world-class research underway here."
