New postgraduate centre
College Hall, the new Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Postgraduate Centre, has been unveiled to
staff and students in the faculty.
Occupying the building formerly used by John Smith's Bookshop, the newly refurbished facility has been
designed for the growing number of postgraduate students in the faculty. Converted over the summer, the
Centre is equipped with PCs, facilities for laptop use, space for individual study, small group
discussion and a social area.
Chris Whatley, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences explained, "Previously, postgraduates in
several parts of the faculty often had to work in small, cramped offices, with out-dated equipment and
facilities; Masters students were particularly poorly provided for."
Chris continued, "The opening of College Hall provides postgraduate students at Dundee with a modern,
sector-leading facility. It will greatly enhance the experience of current postgraduates and provide
departments with a strong selling point as they strive to attract additonal Masters students, which is
crucial for the faculty's financial well-being.
By drawing together postgraduates from a number of departments the centre should encourage collaboration,
cross-fertilisation of ideas and inter-disciplinary activity. I hope the centre will become a powerhouse
of intellectual endeavour and provide an environment in which our postgraduates can not only work
productively but also develop into tomorrow’s academic leaders."
