First aid training at clinical skills
The Clinical Skills centre held a basic first aid course for staff and students from Dundee and
Abertay universities and staff from NHS Tayside. The course was funded by Dundee Squadron, 205 Scottish
Field Hospital Volunteers and was delivered by the Red Cross, one of the UK’s leading providers of first
aid training and support.
Dr Jean Ker, Director of the Clinical Skills Centre said, "This was an excellent way for people to
develop their skills. All of the course participants were formally assessed and received a certificate of
competence based on successful completion of the programme, which will last them for three years."
Red Cross Trainers Kevin Howieson and Nobby Clark said, "The programme focuses on key life-saving skills,
provides an opportunity to learn first aid response to the most common accidents and situations, and is
underpinned by relevant theory. Everyone, regardless of age or ability, can benefit from having some
first aid knowledge and if just one person in every UK household did a two-hour first aid course, at
least three lives a day could be saved."
The Red Cross is one of the UK's leading providers of first aid training and support and every year they
train more than 150,000 first aiders, preparing them to cope with emergencies at work, in the home or in
the event of a major incident.
