Fond farewells
Dr Karol Kenicer has retired from the Department of Dermatology at Ninewells, after 21 years with the
University.
He joined the University as a Consultant in 1982, after arriving in Dundee in the late 1970's from Glasgow.
His retirement was marked with a presentation of gifts, including a painting and a quaich, from his
colleagues.
Professor Graeme Lowe commented, "John was valued for his very wise opinions and was a fountain of knowledge
on all areas of dermatology. He worked extremely hard for the patients of Tayside during his time at the
University."
Professor Philip Seymour has retired from the University's Department of Psychology after a career
lasting nearly 40 years.
Professor Seymour joined the University as a lecturer in 1966. He was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in
1975, Readership in 1982, and to a Personal Chair of Cognitive Psychology in 1988. He served as Head of the
Psychology Department for several years, most recently 1999-2003.
His research focused on the broad area of language and visual cognition and his recent work looked at how
children learn to read and spell, with a particular focus on developmental dyslexia. Having researched
differences between languages, Professor Seymour concluded that young readers of English face a particularly
difficult task.
He has had numerous publications, held numerous grants, and has been an Associate Editor of the Quarterly
Journal of Experimental Psychology.
Professor Seymour was recently conferred with the title of Professor Emeritus. He plans to continue his
research on literacy and reading difficulties during his retirement.
