Night Security Assistance Sandy Jamieson has retired from the University after nearly 20 years service.
A keen carpenter, Sandy plans to spend more time enjoying this hobbie during his retirement.
commonwealth
The Commonwealth Institute, in association with the Centre for Commonwealth Education (CCE), has
established a joint venture with Cambridge University, to make an award of £3,000 every year for the next
five years for outstanding scholarship in educational research.
This first award will be made to the author of the best recently published book or article in the
English language on aspects of fiscal decentralisation impacting primary and secondary education in
Commonwealth countries.

scholarships
Applications for the Stevenson Exchange Scholarships, 2005-2006 should be lodged with Ian Francis,
Academic Secretary, by 31 January 2005.
The scholarship aims to promote friendly relations between students of the Universities of Scotland,
France, Germany and Spain. They are open to undergraduates of any Faculty and graduates of not more than
25 years of age of any Scottish university and are not restricted to students of modern languages.

The Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowships were established to provide
opportunities for academics to be relieved of their teaching and administrative duties, enabling them to
concentrate on full-time research for one year. Applications can only be made online at
https://e-gap.royalsoc.ac.uk or via the e-GAP logo on the
front page of the Society's web site, and should be submitted by 10 December. For more information

karate
The head instructor of the University's Karate Club, Jim Kidd, is celebrating his promotion to the
rank of 7th Dan black belt. The promotion was awarded by Jim's peers in the Scottish Karate Association,
in recognition of his 38 years' service to the Scottish Karate community.

The charity Heart Research is inviting University staff to take up a guaranteed place in the Flora
