Inaugural boxing championship held in Dundee
This month, the Sports Union will be playing host to the first ever women's boxing competition to be
organised by the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA).
The women's competition is part of the British University Boxing Championships to be held on 11 and 12
December at Gardyne Road Campus.
Andrew Renwick, President of the Sports Union, said, "Gold medal prospects are looking good. We have
fighters at lightweight, light welter, welter, middle and superheavy. We also have a woman entering,
which has never been allowed before in this competition."
Although the Sports Association has hosted the Scottish Championships on a number of occasions, this is
the first time that the British University Boxing Championships have been held in Dundee.
Andrew added, "This event is very prestigious. If we do well it will give the University points for the
BUSA rankings."
Since acquiring two new coaches in 2002, the Sports Association has been very successful, winning a
number of gold, silver and bronze medals and taking the title of Club of the Year for two consecutive
years at the annual Blues and Colours ceremony.
The profile of University sportswomen has just been raised even further with the recent success of Excel
Scholar Karen Rigby. Karen won the 50 metre butterfly competition in the BUSA short course swimming
championships, setting a record-breaking time of 27.61 seconds.
