Chevening scholar
The Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and P olicy (CEPMLP) has recently welcomed Ali Al-Anbari,
who was awarded a prestigious Chevening Scholarship to enable him to study at the University.
Ali is a lawyer at the Ministry of Oil in Baghdad, where he represents the interests of the Ministry in the
management of oil in Iraq. During his time at the CEPMLP he will be looking into how the UK manages oil
petroleum contracts. He explains, "The UK uses new technology to manage oil resources, which also affects
how oil contracts are dealt with. I am interested in learning more about this, with a view to looking at how
we can use these methods in Iraq. The technology used in the UK is also much more environmentally friendly
than the technology used in Iraq."
Ali found out about Chevening Scholarships last year when a Consular from the British Embassy visited the
Ministry of Oil to encourage people to apply. It is hoped that the scholarships will promote the enhancement
of cultural understanding and relationships between Britain and Iraq.
Chevening scholarships are funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British
Council. Recipients must be committed to return to their country and contribute to its socio-economic
development by implementing their new skills and knowledge.
