Discovering degrees
2004 has seen the Wider Access Study Centre (WASC) inviting around 300 S2 school pupils and their teachers
to visit the University for a mock day of undergraduate study.
11 local schools took the opportunity to visit the campus and find out about the skills needed by
undergraduates. Three-quarters of the youngsters would be the first member of their family to go on to
Higher Education and many of the children were at risk of being deterred from university because of their
circumstances.
WASC Director, Dr John Blicharski commented, "The massive expansion of this scheme in 2004 has been a real
team effort, which has involved all WASC staff and first class support from Life Sciences, Architecture and
DUSA. We hope to follow the progress of these youngsters, many of whom now say that going to university has
become their goal."
