Honorary readership

a photo of Richard Carr

The University has awarded Richard Carr with an honorary readership in Design History, Theory and Practice - the first honorary readership to be awarded in the history of the School of Design.

Since retiring two years ago, Richard has continued to teach part-time in the School of Design and began lecturing in the School of Architecture last year. During this academic year he will be contributing 15 lectures to the School of Architecture’s courses on humanities and modern culture. Richard is also continuing to lecture abroad: this year he has lectured at the University of Memphis, Tennessee on the subjects of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Italian designer Ettore Sottsass.

Richard also continues to write about art and design for various publications. He has contributed to the historical section of the catalogue marking the closure of the ceramics department of DJCAD and also a publication about Norbert Francis Attard, who Richard describes as an "architect/designer/painter/installation artist/printmaker/photographer".

His writing regularly appears in the magazines Artwork and Building Design and the online magazine www.studio-international.co.uk

His most recent piece, 'Letter from Memphis' compared how the reputations of Mackintosh and Elvis Presley have been exploited since their death!
