Alastair Ross recently retired from the School of Fine Art, after a career lasting 37 years.

Alastair was a student at DJCAD in the early 1960s. He joined the staff immediately afterwards in 1966, continuing to teach until this year - making him the longest serving member of staff.

As well as his teaching career, Alastair achieved considerable success in his career as an artist. Since his first exhibition in Paris in 1967, he has held exhibitions all over the world - from the USA, to the Netherlands, London and Ireland. He was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Abertay, Dundee, this year.

An informal dinner was held for Alastair by his colleagues to mark his retirement and he was presented with a gift from the school to thank him for all his work.

Euan McArthur, Head of Fine Art at DJCAD, commented, "Alastair made an unrivalled contribution to Fine Art in Dundee over almost four decades. His knowledge of sculptural form, materials and processes, and his understanding of the human figure, were passed on to several generations of students. His enthusiasm for his subject never faded, nor did his encouragement of students at whatever level they might be in the programme. In fact, his enthusiasm was often the catalyst that attracted first year students into sculpture in the first place, while his rigorous teaching helped others in higher years to realise their potential."
