Supportive Care in Radiotherapy co-edited by Mary Wells Churchill Livingstone: ISBN 0 443 06486 5

More than 50% of people with cancer have radiotherapy at some time during their illness, yet their needs for supportive care have received little attention compared with the needs of patients undergoing other types of cancer treatment. Unlike other texts, which concentrate on the planning and delivery of radiotherapy, this book addresses the impact of treatment on the individual and the issues facing health carers who provide clinical and supportive care.

Supportive Care in Radiotherapy integrates key aspects of assessment, physical and psychosocial morbidity and toxicity management, placing these in the physical, psychosocial and organisational context in which they occur. Patients’ perspectives are used throughout the text to illustrate the physical and emotional experience of radiotherapy and the difficulties facing patients who are in transition through the system.

New and innovative approaches to patient care are discussed as well as challenges facing radiotherapy practitioners today. Practical advice on the assessment and clinical management of acute and late side-effects is provided. Critical reviews of the current evidence base are included, along with future directions for clinical research and development.

Life Is Not An Easy Matter... but still.... edited by Delia Gallagher, Tandem Press: ISBN 0 9538413 4 0

Sixteen new writers add their voices to the world’s tapestry o’ tales. This book is a big wonderful celebration of writing and of the diversity of voices there are in our world. All the writers in this anthology have experience of or are affected by mental illness but this does not define them or their writing. The book is full of strong and honest writing that doesn’t flinch from difficult subjects. It also contains warm, wise, funny, sad and thoughtful stories, poems, an essay, a play and illustrations produced by writers from the Dundee Rep theatre arts advocacy project writers group who were awarded a bursary from the lottery in order to produce the book.

The book is available to buy in the university bookshop and also on the web at www.tandempress.com/saltypress with all proceeds going to mental health associations.

Access to Housing by Bill Edgar, Joe Doherty and Henk Meert The Policy Press: ISBN 1 86134 482 1

The European Union strategy to combat poverty and social exclusion, agreed in 2000, identifies five key objectives one of which is to ensure access to affordable and decent housing for all citizens. The publication of this book is therefore very timely. While there is no overall shortage of housing in the European Union, 3 million people are homeless and 18 million are housed in inadequate accommodation, that is housing which lacks basic amenities, is structurally unsound, overcrowded or does not offer security of tenure.

This book seeks an understanding of the situation through a detailed analysis of the European housing market in both private and state spheres. It offers the first EU-wide examination of housing provision, its changing nature and impact on homelessness.

The book examines a number of themes in depth including, the expansion of an increasingly unregulated private market, the contraction of the state sector, the (re)emergence of the voluntary sector and the role of vulnerable people themselves. In this way, the book identifies the institutional changes and policy prescriptions that are necessary to manage the demands of homelessness and inadequate housing among Europe’s most vulnerable people.

This is the fourth book in a series published by the same authors. The final book in the series - on immigration and homelessness - is due to be published in April 2004
