Ylva Player-Dahnsjö of the Library Conservation Unit was elected President of the European Confederation of
Conservator-Restorers’ Organisations ( ECCO ) at its Assemblee Generale in Brussels. The Confederation is the
single voice representing the profession throughout Europe, and performs important advisory and lobbying
activities to heritage bodies, strategy groups, national governments and the EU."

Estates and Buildings raised an incredible £1,020 for Comic Relief through a raffle with 41 prizes donated
by members of the department and a fancy dress bucket collection by May Fyffe who came in during her holidays
and raised £80 from amused colleagues.

The Rolex awards for Enterprise are calling for entries to their biennial competition. The awards are for
enterprising individuals from around the globe who are asked to submit innovative working projects in one of
five areas of human endeavour: science and medicine; technology and innovation, exploration and discovery; the
environment; and cultural heritage. The brochure with 2000’s winning projects is available from Gillian Burch in

Professor Brian Burchell has been elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Brian has
written over 200 papers and reviews which have been cited over 7,000 times.

The Young Entrepreneurs Society held a seminar with University alumnus Charles Lovatt who established LI
Components Ltd after graduating from Dundee. The society currently has 85 active members and is preparing in

Kathleen McMillan of the Learning Enhancement Unit in the Centre for Learning and Teaching has been
nominated as a member of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council’s planning committee for quality
enhancement needs. She will join the group looking at responding to students needs. Dr Richard Parsons, from
the same unit, will join the consultative group on assessment.

Angela Roger of the Faculty of Education & Social Work spent a week recently in Colombia as a member of a
higher education delegation on a visit organised by the international poverty fighting organisation War on Want.
Angela, a senior lecturer, attended the Global Workers’ Forum, the focus of which was education.

Professor Mikael Heimann, the Director of the Regional Conference Centre for child psychiatry at the
University of Bergen gave a public lecture at the University titled, ‘Is imitation in infancy important for the
development of communication skills?’. The lecture was part of a Joint Research Symposium on imitation, between
the Universities of Dundee and Bergen. The symposium was sponsored by the British Psychological Society, Dundee
City Council and the Norwegian Consulate.

John Drummond in the Dental School has been elected chair of the central committee for dental academic staff
in the British Dental Association. John, who is the admissions tutor in the Dental School will become a member
of the association’s executive board. Dr Drummond said: "To chair this committee will be challenging but I hope
I can take a role in leading the association’s campaign to get a better deal for dental education, dental
students and dental research."

GC trophy
The medics saw off competition from six other teams to clinch the Gradutes' Council sports trophy in the
Institue of Sport and Exercise. The evening of potted sports attracted teams from the Institute, Medicine, Law,
Dentistry, the Excel Scholars and Royal and Ancient golf Bursars, the Sports Union, and Graduates' Council. The
winning team from left to right were Alan Smith, Calum Herbert-Smith, Dave Kaye, Jonny Oparka, Peggy Adams and
Richie Oparka. They were presented with the trophy by the Convener of Graduates' Council business committee Anne
Reynolds.
