New dean

Professor Brian Burchell has been voted the new dean of medicine by the faculty of medicine, dentistry, nursing and midwifery. His term of office will run for three years from 1 August 2003.

Professor Burchell is head of molecular and cellular pathology and honorary professor of biochemistry at the University of St Andrews. He first came to Dundee’s Queens College in 1965 as a biochemistry student and graduated from the University of St Andrews. Appointed as a lecturer in biochemistry in 1976, he has served as a staff member for 27 years. A fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Pathologists, he recently became a member of the Institute of Learning and Teaching.

A member of the medical school executive for more than 10 years, he was a prime mover in development of the 5-star rated clinical laboratory sciences section of the medical school. He is a member of senate and court.

He is a Wellcome Trust programme grant holder and has been awarded more than £2m in research grants since 1996. Brian has presented more than 100 invited lectures to international symposia, published more than 150 peer-reviewed research papers and 25 invited research reviews. He has successfully trained 24 PhD students and 20 postdoctoral fellows. He is on the editorial board of pharmacogenetics, drug metabolism and disposition.
