Sculpture on campus
An imposing sculpture on loan to the University of Dundee from one of Britain's leading sculptors has taken its place on campus.
Michael Sandle's nine feet high bronze Queen of the Night has placed on the old Hawkhill in front of Belmont student residence. The statue - a masked woman wielding a wreath of burning penises - proved to be a talking point when it was displayed at its previous location in Holland Park, London and is likely to be just as much of a conversation piece during its stay in Dundee.
Michael Sandle, most famous for Malta Siege Bell Memorial, his war memorial commission which features a 13 -tonne bronze bell, is expected to visit the University next month to take part in a discussion about Queen of the Night and the more general issue of art in public spaces.
Professor Alan Robb, head of the school of fine art at the University's faculty of Duncan of Jordanstone said, "It is exciting for the University and the city that we have on loan a sculpture from the acclaimed Michael Sandle. Queen of the Night is a powerful and challenging sculpture and hopefully it will encourage people to consider its subject matter and more widely, the part that sculpture can play in our environment."
