Foyer Gallery
Sleek, elegant and sophisticated - the transformation of the tower foyer into a showcase for the best of the University's artwork - old and new - was realised just before the winter break.
On the west wall of the foyer a gallery has been installed with the capacity to display up to six large art works. The display is lit by theatrical lighting suspended from the mezzanine of the Foyer Gallery.
Project co-ordinator Willie Tuttle had just one week to complete the task. Starting at 8am on Monday morning the team managed to install the new gallery by noon on Friday in the nick of time for their Christmas lunch.
The new gallery was designed in-house harnessing the expertise of the director of estates and buildings and Willie Tuttle who organised the Roseangle art gallery. The University crests on each end of the display panel cleverly combine the aesthetic and the practical - ventilation is tucked in behind the angled boards.
Peter Copland, director of estates and buildings said: "The new gallery is spectacular. It transforms the foyer and gives us the opportunity to display exciting work. The flexible lighting system allows a large range to be displayed. The project was completed in a record time of 5 working days - an excellent example of co-ordination between in house tradesmen and external contractors."
Some old masters from the University collection are currently being exhibited but the selection of art will change regularly allowing visitors, staff and students to enjoy works in the collection and contemporary pieces from our world renowned faculty of art and design.
