John McGrath scholarship
The Scottish Universities' international summer school (SUISS), which represents the University of Glasgow, Edinburgh University, the University of Dundee, the University of Aberdeen and the Open University of Scotland, is to set up a scholarship in memory of celebrated British playwright and theatre director John McGrath who died on January 22 2002 aged 66. Popularly known for writing and directing early episodes of BBC TV's Z Cars in 1962, John McGrath went on to found the theatre company 7:84 in 1971.
SUISS could think of no better way to celebrate the life and work of John McGrath, than by establishing a scholarship in his name, which would allow a theatre student from anywhere in the world to come to Scotland to study. The Scholarship would include all tuition, accommodation, meals, library-use and a cultural and social programme. SUISS aims to raise enough funds to offer one theatre student per year a free place for 3 or 6 weeks.
The Summer School hopes to launch the 'John McGrath Scholarship for Theatre Studies at its yearly reception in the Playfair Library of Edinburgh University on 18 July 2002. For more information please email the School on SUISS@ed.ac.uk or visit the website, at: http://www.arts.ed.ac.uk/suiss.
