Pictured with Professor Jill Belch, Dr Stuart Fair, Professor Annie Anderson (left to right) are young fundraisers from Longforgan who visited Ninewells to see the builders begin the refurbishment. The children from Longforgan Primary School raised £358 for the institute by taking part in a sponsored keep fit.
Work has now started on the institute for cardiovascular research - the first institute of its kind in Scotland bringing together experts from different fields to tackle heart disease.
£1 million has been raised to start phase one of the new institute - clinical research rooms that will allow interaction between research staff and patients. The new facilities will be completed and ready for use in February 2003.
TICR will bring together on one site, skilful clinicians and researchers from all areas of the medical school who have a special interest in the prevention and treatment of heart disease.
Dr Stuart Fair, of the Leng Trust which donated £100,000 to the project, attended the start of the refurbishment with Annie Anderson, Professor of Food Choice, Professor Jill Belch, from the department of medicine and Robert McLaren, chairman of the TICR fundraising committee. TICR is now moving into the second phase of its fundraising campaign and is actively seeking new volunteers to take it to the next level.
A number of high profile and exciting events are being planned in the Dundee area over the next year to raise money for TICR.
