MRC fellowship

photo of Kate Storey Dr Kate Storey, a principal investigator in the division of cell and developmental biology has just secured a prestigious five-year Senior Non-Clinical Fellowship, worth £900,000, from the Medical Research Council. The fellowship will pay for Dr Storey's salary and provide funding for two full-time postdoctoral research assistants and one full-time technician as well as equipment and the cost of research consumables.

Dr Storey's research aims to understand fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the generation of the nervous system. This involves the characterisation of key signalling pathways and transcription factors that drive cells to become neurons and has long-term implications for the generation of therapeutic neural transplants and gene therapy approaches to neural injury and disease.

The MRC Senior Non-Clinical Fellowships are highly prestigious awards, reserved for scientists of exceptional ability who are well-qualified for academic research careers, having demonstrated clear ability as independent researchers and showing the potential to be leaders in their field. The Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis with only eight awards this year.
