Professor of bioinformatics
Professor Geoffrey Barton, has been appointed to the Chair of Bioinformatics at SIMBIOS. Bioinformatics lies at the interface between computer science and biology. His research aims to develop high performance computer methods to identify the most interesting proteins from the flood of information coming from biological research worldwide. A further goal is to develop computer modelling techniques that make use of the latest advances in software techniques to generate accurate models of proteins and other molecules without the need for experiment.
"I'm very happy to come to the University of Dundee where there is an incredibly dynamic research environment for world class researchers. There are currently two expanding areas in science, biological sciences and computing. I'm involved in the most exciting part of science - bringing these two together - and I'm now in the most exciting place to do it.
Professor Barton who was formerly head of the European Macromolecular Structure Database Project at the European Bioinformatics Institute, Hinxton, Cambridge, will be based in the new post-genomics suite in the MSI.
SIMBIOS is a joint venture between the University of Dundee and the University of Abertay, Dundee.
