MacAulay inaugurated Fred MacAulay was inaugurated as Rector of the University of Dundee on a glorious sunny afternoon in May in a flurry of red gowns, snapping photographers and... pints of beer. He was welcomed to Dundee in the City Square by the Lord Provost before being dragged in the University carriage round a number of local hostelries en route to the Bonar Hall where he was met by Vice Chancellor Sir Alan Langlands. The new rector delivered his witty and anecdotal speech to a delighted audience of students and staff. Here are some of the highlights:
"I'm a graduate of this University from 1978 in Accountancy and Jurisprudence, which even then I suspected might be the ideal combination for a career in stand-up comedy."
"You have to be prepared to keep learning, to keep striving to achieve your potential. Life can be easy. Life can be simple. But to have any sense of fulfilment you must be prepared to learn at any stage in your life."
"Every day spent in this city will help make you the person that you will become. Every hour spent in tutorials. Every hour of every lecture you attend and many of the ones you miss. And the greatest thing of all...is that when you graduate, it is for life. You will be a University of Dundee graduate for the rest of your lives."
