Robin Vaughan, a senior lecturer in the department of electronic engineering and physics, has recently been awarded The Remote Sensing Society's highest honour, its Gold Medal and Honorary Fellowship for Life.

This award is made for sustained and distinguished contribution to remote sensing. Robin has been a member of the Council of the Remote Sensing Society continuously for over 15 years, serving as newsletter editor, honorary general secretary and then vice president. He has also just completed eight years as treasurer and then chairman of the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories.

He has been a member of the Earth Science Advisory Committee of the European Space Agency, and has served on various other committees of both ESA and the Council of Europe. His teaching and research have also contributed to the high international reputation that the University enjoys in the field of remote sensing. The award was presented by the Honorary President of the Society, Lord Hesketh, at the annual awards ceremony held in Church House, London, in September.

Also, at the same ceremony, Gu Yan, a recent research graduate from the EEP department, received the Remote Sensing Society's Student Award. This is presented annually for the best PhD thesis submitted in the previous year. He is the third PhD student from Dundee to receive this award in the last 10 years
