Tower Foyer Gallery, University of Dundee

5 November – 23 December 2016

Mon-Fri 09.30-19.00 Sat 13.00-17.00

Parallel by Rebecca Scouller (H G Wells 150 project)Marking 150 years since the birth of visionary writer H G Wells, this exhibition features striking pieces of art, design and typography created by Graphic Design students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, made in response to Wells’s scientific romances. Both Level 2 and Level 3 students have created work for the show, resulting in a wide variety of forms including newspapers, posters, book covers, models and films.

Level 2 students were asked to create individual designs or artefacts inspired by specific Wells stories, while Level 3 students were set a typographical exercise – each created a three-page newspaper in which page 1 focused on a particular year, page 2 looked at Wells in context and page 3 was about scientific discoveries of the time.

To provide additional context, the exhibition also includes contemporary illustrations of Wells’s work and original scientific equipment from the Museum Collections relating to his stories.

The exhibition is part of the University of Dundee’s events programme H G Wells at 150: Hope and Fear led by the School of Humanities for the Being Human Festival.
