The Art of Teaching 2001

Charts & Models from the  University of Dundee Museum Collection

3839-8d

An exhibition in the Lamb Gallery, Tower Building

17 September - 15 December 2001

Introduction

Until slides and computer displays took over, most university teaching was illustrated by printed wall charts and three-dimensional models. Many of these date from the late Victorian era, a period of intense scientific research. The establishment of new teaching institutions like University College Dundee created a demand for detailed drawings and models of biological specimens and other scientific subjects. The educational value of these works was significant, but what remains astonishing to this day is their artistic quality. This exhibition reveals some of the highlights from the extensive collection of charts and models held by the University.

A new version of this exhibition was shown in the Tower Foyer Gallery in 2011.
