David Foggie: The Painter's Painter

At the time of his death in 1948, the Dundee-born painter David Foggie was hailed as "one of the great personalities of our time". It was said that his name "is known in every part of Scotland where Art is in question." In the half-century since then, however, that name has become sadly forgotten. This is the first exhibition of his work since 1978, and aims to help revive interest in Foggie's extraordinary talents.

On display in this exhibition are more than 60 oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and engravings - possibly the most extensive collection of David Foggie's work ever brought together in public. As well as pieces from the University's own collections, we also have works on loan from the National Galleries of Scotland, the Royal Scottish Academy, McManus Galleries and numerous other public and private collections.

David Foggie: A Chronology

1878: Born on 31 December to James & Margaret Foggie of 141 Ann Street, Dundee
1887: Begins study at Dundee School of Art, run by art master William Grubb at Dundee High School
1897: Becomes Pupil Assistant at Dundee School of Art
1897: Joins the Dundee Graphic Arts Association
1898: Leaves Dundee to study at Antwerp Academy, Belgium
1900: Returns home to begin a career as an artist, staying with his family at Pearlbank, Tayport
1901: Death of Foggie's close friend, George Dutch Davidson
1902: Marries Margaret Anne Jack of Spring Cottage, Tayport, and returns to further study in Antwerp, Florence and Paris
1904: Returns home and has a house built at Lucklawhill overlooking Leuchars and Balmullo, Fife
1905: Founder member of Tayport Artists Circle
c 1912: Rents studio at 132a Nethergate, Dundee
1912: Elected President of Dundee Art Society
1918: Elected RSW
1919: Moves to 38 Danube Street, Edinburgh
1920: Begins teaching at Edinburgh College of Art
1925: Elected ARSA
1930: Elected Vice President of the RSW
1930: Elected RSA
1932: Becomes Secretary of the RSA, a position he retains until his death
1933: Exhibits first collection of the 'Edinburgh Portraits'
1939: Retires from Edinburgh College of Art
1946: Returns to Dundee to open annual exhibition of the Dundee Art Society
1948: Dies on 2 June, aged 69
