This exhibition celebrates three of Dundee's best-known artists, Alberto Morrocco, David McClure and James McIntosh Patrick. All three taught at Duncan of Jordanstone College for many years, and all sadly died within a few months of each other in 1998. This exhibition features rarely seen works by all three artists as well as some of their children and grandchildren, many of whom have also become successful professional artists or designers.

The exhibition has been created by the University of Dundee Museum Services with guest curator Paola McClure and in association with the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Alberto Morrocco (1917-1998)

Alberto Morrocco was born in Aberdeen where he studied at Gray's School of Art. Because of his Italian parents, Morrocco spent much of the Second World War detained at Edinburgh Castle. He returned to Aberdeen for a few years after the war before coming to Dundee in 1950 as Head of the Drawing and Painting Department at Dundee College of Art (later Duncan of Jordanstone College) where he remained until retiring in 1982. He was awarded an OBE in 1993, the same year that a major retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the McManus Galleries.

David McClure (1926-1998)

David McClure was born in Renfrewshire and after the Second World War studied Fine Art at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art. After a few years teaching part-time in Edinburgh, he came to Dundee College of Art in 1957, teaching in the Drawing and Painting Department (later the School of Fine Art) until 1985. In his last three years at the College he was Morrocco's successor as Head of Painting.

James McIntosh Patrick (1907-1998)

Born in Dundee, McIntosh Patrick is perhaps the city's most famous painter. He studied at Glasgow School of Art before being appointed by Dundee School of Art (later Duncan of Jordanstone College) as one of the first tutors on their new Diploma Course in Drawing and Painting, introduced in 1929. He would continue to teach on and off at the Art College for the rest of his life, including a popular Saturday morning Continuing Education class which ran for over 50 years. Among many honours, he was voted Dundee's Citizen of the Year, became the first artist to be made an Honorary Fellow of the Art College and was awarded an honorary LLD by the University of Dundee.
