Robert McGilvray: TIME/TIDE - Moments from Places

Tower Foyer Gallery, University of Dundee

1 November - 23 December 2014

Mon-Fri 09.30-20.30 Sat 09.30-16.30

Lomond by Robert McGilvrayThis exhibition features recent work by artist Robert McGilvray, who is well-known as a painter and for his various public art projects.

The artist explains: “The paintings are largely concerned with an imaginary diary of many years’ close contact with the skies and waters of the Tay Estuary, absorbing its ever changing light, colour and climatic conditions. They reflect journeys of memory and responses to a sense of place. More recently, I have also begun to explore memories of the west coast of Scotland and the Islands, acknowledging the dramatic difference in mood between the two areas.”

Bob will be retiring from his role as lecturer in Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in December, having taught there since 1977, and previously studied there in 1970-75. He has been an influential figure in the Dundee art world since then, having helped to found the Dundee Group (Artists) Ltd and Forebank Studios in the 1970s (the predecessor of WASPS studios); co-ordinated the ground-breaking Blackness and Dundee public art programmes in the 1980s and 90s; and co-founded the Seagate Gallery in 1986.

SPECIAL EVENT! On Wednesday 10 December at 1pm there will be an informal guided tour of the exhibition by Bob McGilvray - this event is absolutely free and there is no need to book.
