De Rerum Natura by B E Cole

De Rerum Natura, wax and mixed media scultpure, 2012. DUNUC ARTS:4416
Presented by the Art Fund and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation

Cole is a sculptor from South Wales whose forms derive from the landscape and organic structures carved and moulded by micro-organisms and processes which are unseen but whose patterns were studied and explained by D’Arcy Thompson.  Cole uses sculpture as a way of continuing this process.  An Associate of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, Cole exhibits nationally and internationally including the Royal Academy in London and recent shows with the Colin Jellicoe Gallery, Manchester; Belgrave Gallery, St Ives; and the Derwent Wye Gallery, Derbyshire. Her work is held in public and private collections in the UK, USA, Australia and Germany.

For our exhibition Heresies, Cole created various sculptural forms but the most striking was De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things), a mixed media installation featuring abstract but biomorphic wax sculptures on a bed of dyed sand, like marine organisms on a sea bed, or fossils revealed in a rock face. This smaller version of the work was commissioned from the artist for the collection.
