The title of this exhibition might have put you off – hormonal is a term often used in a derogatory manner, to describe a woman who might be behaving irrationally in response to their emotions. In fact there is nothing wrong with being hormonal (and men can be too). Hormones are a crucial part of our biological beings – sending signals between organs and tissues for the functioning of everything from our breathing to digesting to sleeping. For the Women in Science Festival, this exhibition brings together a range of contemporary art works, reconsidering how we understand the hormone oestrogen – socially, politically, technologically and environmentally.

Alongside the art works in the exhibition, we featured research from scientist Doreen Cantrell concerning the use of estrogen as a biological tool.
