Helen Storey’s new immersive installation Neurogenesis will be shown at Centrespace in 2018, as part of the VRC at 20 programme, celebrating the history of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design’s Visual Research Centre in Dundee Contemporary Arts.
Neurogenesis has been created in collaboration with developmental biologist Kate Storey and digital creative studio, Holition. Images of nerve cell generation emerge from a dress formed with materials worn by time. With its central motif of neuron birth, Neurogenesis challenges us to think how the nervous system forms and changes, connecting us to our lived experience of the function and degeneration of neurons within our bodies.
Helen and Kate Storey first collaborated in 1997, on their award winning project Primitive Streak that was exhibited in Dundee in 2002. The works were ground breaking in a science and art collaboration, using textile and dress to elucidate the first 1000 hours of human life.
Helen is a social artist and researcher, based at the Centre for Sustainable Fashion at University of the Arts London. She is also co-director of The Helen Storey Foundation, a not for profit arts organisation creating collaborative work across art, fashion, science, design and technology sectors.
Helen’s current project, Dress For Our Time, uses a decommissioned United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) tent and data visualisation to explore climate change, migrancy and the real needs of refugees living in UNHCR’s Za’atari camp in Jordan.
