Charlie Murphy

Charlie Murphy's works Infinite Descent, Brains in a Dish and Metaphors for the Mind feature in Trajectories at LifeSpace in 2018. Charlie is a member of the Created Out of Mind research group based in The Hub at Wellcome Collection in London that aims to explore, challenge and shape perceptions and understanding of dementias through science and the creative arts.

For Trajectories, Charlie is presenting an epic luminogram image and video work titled Infinite Decent which was created from her performance Safe Light at Tempting Failure Festival in Bristol in 2014. The art work records the artist's slow descent of a stairwell via multiple exposures on a carpet of the photographic paper which captured the stairwell's architecture and a poignantly feminine blood letting. Safe Light is a critical personal response to key works from the history of performance, photography, the moving image and painting, including Edward Muybridge’s photographic studies of human locomotion, Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending ta staircase no.2 (1912) to Franko B’s iconic performance I miss you (1999-2005).

Works from Charlie's Brains in a Dish research project are exhibited alongside a new photographic work Metaphors for the Mind, investigating a collection of scientific tests designed to understand the role of spatial orientation and balance mechanism disorders in symptoms of Posterior Cortical Atrophy and typical Alzheimer’s Disease.

Charlie is a visual and performance artist currently based in London and studied Fine Art (Photography) at the Royal College of Art. She is co-director of Created Out of Mind project based in The Hub at Wellcome Collection London. Her practice embraces materials and disciplines including glass, light, sculpture, photography, performance and video through creating installations, public engagement events, performances, screenings and exhibitions.

Widely known for her popular touring ‘kiss-in’ events, her projects often involve participation and collaboration. Charlie has developed projects for many different festivals, galleries and public contexts in the UK and internationally.
