An experimental poetry workshop in avant-garde feminist semiotic counter strategies and visual pleasures inspired by the work of Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen led by writer and poet Jane Goldman. In the workshop participants will invent creative constraints, make poetry, explore essayism in dialogue with the film theory and film practice of two of the most influential theorists and practitioners of gaze and counter gaze. This event accompanies the exhibition A is for Avant-Garde, Z is for Zero: Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen and is held online as part of Cooper Gallery's online programme A space in between.

These workshop are free and open to all. No prior experience is required to participate. Participants will be writing and will be asked to have their preferred writing material to hand during the workshop (pen and paper or computer).

Biography
Jane Goldman is Reader in English Literature at Glasgow University and likes anything a word can do. She has published widely on the Avant-garde, Modernism, Feminism, Queer Studies, and Literary Theory, often with particular focus on the politics of the visual. She is a member of the 12 Collective, founded in 2016 at the Cooper Gallery, and she is currently a member of the Writers’ Shift Crew at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh. Her poems have been published in the magazines Scree, Tender, Gutter, Blackbox Manifold, Adjacent Pineapple and elsewhere. Her first slim volume is Border Thoughts (Leamington Books, 2014), “a little theatrical box of spectacle and light […] the living underworld of Brecht’s Threepenny Opera translated into raucous girlish post-war wayward ways” (Lisa Jeschke, Hix Eros 6). She is currently preparing for publication a new collection: SEKXPHRASTICS.
