Jane Rendell

Site-Writing: transitional spaces – textual and subjective – in montage constructions

Wednesday 7 October 2015, 6 - 7.30pm

Cooper Gallery

Cooper Gallery is delighted to welcome writer and academic Jane Rendell to present a talk as part of our ongoing Group Critical Writing programme.

Consisting of readings, commentaries and conceptualisations, in this presentation Rendell will explore the transitional spaces in her site-writing practice, particularly those which, drawing on spatial montage constructions, configure and reconfigure relations between voices, words and images. Rendell is an academic and writer with a training in architectural design and history, whose work crosses architecture, art, feminism, history and psychoanalysis. She has developed concepts of ‘critical spatial practice’ (2002/6) and ‘site-writing’ (2007/10) through such authored books as Site-Writing (2010), Art and Architecture (2006), and The Pursuit of Pleasure (2002). Her new book concerning transitional spaces in architecture and psychoanalysis will be published by IB Tauris in December 2015. Rendell is Professor of Architecture and Art at the Bartlett, UCL.

Group Critical Writing is an initiative in Cooper Gallery’s programme advocating for experimental, radical and critical writing about arts and culture in Scotland and beyond. Inaugurated in summer 2014 as part of the Studio Jamming Group Critical Writing Residency, Group Critical Writing publishes new art writing via the dedicated website, hosts residencies with emerging art writers in Scotland and presents live Reading Events.
