As Empathic As It Is Unfaithful: An Illustrated Talk on Drawing

Adam Benmakhlouf
As Empathic As It Is Unfaithful: An Illustrated Talk on Drawing
Tuesday 8 December 2020, 6–7.30pm
Zoom

Artist Adam Benmakhlouf will share how they use drawing as a means of recording and imagining alternative and radical kinds of relationships, sexualities and lifestyles. Adam’s drawings and experimental comics record their lived experiences of camp friendship, gender nonconformity and attempts to love, work and/or live with one another as queer people of colour with complex trauma. For this illustrated talk, Adam will create an expanded drawing collage as a visual aid that will sometimes work with their verbal presentation, but also depart and challenge the points spoken aloud. Audiences will also be prompted at points to draw using any materials around, as an invitation to picture anew and reflect on the relationships that make us using line, gesture and mark making.

Part of the series of events to accompany the exhibition Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2020.

Sign-up
This event is free and open to all. Places can be booked via Eventbrite.

Biography
Adam Benmakhlouf (they/them) is a documentary fantasist working in drawing, sound, writing, teaching and programming. Committedly manifold, in their practice they embody and experimentally represent nuanced strategies of world-building formed out of necessity and hope by BIPOCs and queers.
