Cooper Gallery's detour in the space in-between where we find ourselves, somewhere between life as it was and the world to come, begins by sharing reading, listening and screening material related to and featured in our currently postponed exhibition A is for Avant-Garde, Z is for Zero: Laura Mulvey & Peter Wollen, compiled with generous support and solidarity from all the extraordinary minds involved.
These materials are kindly hosted below after the project end as an continued resource, with kind permission of Laura Mulvey, Leslie Dick and exhibition co-curators Oliver Fuke and Nicolas Helm-Grovas.
Screening
Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti
In 1982, Mulvey and Wollen curated an exhibition of Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti’s work at the Whitechapel Gallery. This hugely influential exhibition provided the subject for Mulvey and Wollen’s documentary Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti (1983), which offers a powerful assessment of both artists’ lives and work.

GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (remix remixed)
A digital re-edit of an iconic film fragment focusing on the performance and gesture of Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe, made by Laura Mulvey. The short video examines representational power, the significance of the performed gesture and the temporal affects of deferred meaning.
