EMBARGO until photo call at 5.20pm on Tuesday 15 June at the Sports Centre, University of Dundee.
15 June 99
An innovative programme offering special help to talented students aspiring to the very top of their sports is launched today (Tuesday 15) at the University of Dundee.
Student sports scholarships announced The names of the first students to benefit from the new Excel Sports Scholarship awards will be announced at a ceremony organised by Mr Brian Ewing Director of the University's newly named Institute of Sport and Exercise.
He said: "Many outstanding sportsmen and women at university struggle to combine their academic programme with the fulfilment of their true sporting potential. The Excel Sports Scholarship programme aims to support those students who have the potential to represent their country in their sport, by easing the other pressures of academic life."
Each student selected for the programme will benefit from access to training facilities, sports science support and an individually tailored education programme to empower scholars to reach the highest level of competition. A personal sports mentor will be allocated to help each student tackle any problems along the way.
Sports scholarships will be available from the start of the next academic year, in October but Mr Ewing stresses that while any sport is eligible, only participants of the highest calibre will be considered for an Excel Scholarship.
He said: "The University has established a reputation for its commitment to sporting excellence across a range of disciplines. These scholarships are an extension of that commitment and we hope they will lead to future generations of students increasing the elite cohort of Dundee University sportsmen and women playing for their country - a cohort which, most recently, includes rugby internationalist Stewart Campbell, Great British athlete Lorna Jackson and Scottish and Commonwealth Games hockey player Nicola Kleppang."
The scheme is supported by Bett Inns Limited and the Rotary Club of Dundee.
The launch will be attended by University Principal Dr Ian Graham-Bryce, Chief Executive of Bett Inns Limited Mr Ian Bett and a representative from The Rotary Club of Dundee, among others./ends
