Texan Researchers Visit School of Life Sciences
PHOTOCALL: MONDAY SEPT 12TH, 6 PM, Wellcome Trust Building, University of Dundee, (delegates will be gathered outside the building)
The University of Dundee today welcomes a major delegation of Texan researchers, together with
leading scientists from across the UK, for a biosciences workshop in the field of Cell Signalling
to be held at the School of Life Sciences from today until Wednesday (September 14th).
The workshop is being staged as part of the Department of Trade and Industry/Texas Bioscience
Collaboration, and will involve leading researchers from ten Universities in Texas and their
counterparts from Universities throughout the UK.
The workshop hosted by the University of Dundee is the eleventh in the series hosted by leading
institutions in both UK and Texas since the workshop programme began in February 2003. The
workshop brings together leading scientists from Texas and UK for 3 days of presentations and
discussion on Cell Signalling. This is a key area for the development of drugs to treat many
diseases, including Diabetes, Neurodegenerative diseases and immunology, the areas on which the
conference will focus. The researchers will explore ways in which they can work together
effectively to move this exciting and challenging research area forward.
Margaret Parton, the DTI's Programme Director, said:
"I am delighted that the University of Dundee, internationally renowned for its research in Cell
Signaling is hosting this very significant workshop for the DTI UK/Texas Programme. I am sure we
will see some very strong collaborations go forward as a result of what I am sure will be an
exciting and stimulating 3 days."
Professor Sir Philip Cohen, Director of the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit at the University of
Dundee said: "We were really delighted that so many of the key Research Institutions from Texas
wanted to visit Dundee and attend the Cell Signalling meeting. There are many leading researchers
in this field in Texas and I hope that this conference will lead to fruitful collaborations in the
future".
The Collaboration Programme, launched by Lord Sainsbury in June 2002 brings together leading
scientists from UK and Texas to harness the combined expertise, know how and unique assets of
leading Institutions to accelerate the flow of innovative technology and processes through to the
market for the benefit of healthcare in both countries.
The programme provides practical and financial assistance and supports activities such as thematic
workshops, discussion meetings and short secondments to support collaborative research, knowledge
and skills transfer and commercialisation projects.
