Applied Computing prize winners
Photo opportunity: 11.00am Wednesday 21 September, lecture theatre, ground floor, Queen Mother
Building, University of Dundee
Professor Alan Newell will present prizes to over twenty students from the University of Dundee's
Division of Applied Computing commending their exceptional performance over the last academic year
at the 2005 applied computing prize giving.
Katie Went, now studying for her PhD in improving software development for safety critical systems,
has picked up three prizes including the British Computer Society prize for top senior honours
student. The 23-year-old developed a prototype of a computerised prescribing system that could be
used in hospitals to improve the drug treatment process. Following a demonstration of the final
prototype at Ninewells Hospital Dundee, NHS Tayside has proposed financial support to extend the
project.
Katie's final year project has also been short-listed as the top applied computing project with
ScotlandIS, the trade body for the information and communications technologies industry. Katy
will be presented with her award from ScotlandIS on 5th October.
The prizes will be awarded at 11.00am, in the recently opened Queen Mother Building lecture
theatre, on Wednesday 21st September 2005.
Dr. Peter Gregor, Head of Applied Computing said, "This will be the seventh year that a Dundee
University student has won a national computing award - it is a terrific recognition of the
quality of degree we provide. We are now teaching our students in the superb new Queen Mother
Building, so 2006 promises to be a first-class year, too."
