University staff retirals

Photo opportunity: Tuesday 30 September, 12.45 pm, Postgraduate Dental Centre, Dental School, Park Place. 4.30pm in the River Rooms, Floor Nine, Tower Building, University of Dundee.

Three University of Dundee staff members will receive retiral gifts and presentations on Tuesday 30 September after a total of 57 years service.

There will be a presentation for two members of staff from the School of Dentistry with Professor William Saunders, Dean of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing.

In 1953, Alexander Ness started a laboratory apprenticeship at the Gatty Marine Laboratory, St Andrews University (before the creation of the University of Dundee in 1967). He completed his National Service in the RAF from 1959 to 1961, and was then appointed Senior Laboratory Technician in the University of Dundee's Department of Dental Surgery in 1967. Eight years ago he became Chief Technician. Throughout his career he has been involved in technicians' professional bodies, serving as chairman of trade union Amicus MSF (Manufacturing, Science and Finance) from 1988 to 2001.

Dorothy Morrison started work as a secretary at DRI in 1963, moving to Tayside Health Board headquarters in 1968. Dorothy went on to work in the Department of Pathology at Ninewells Hospital in 1974, then the Department of Anathaestics in 1977.

In 1991 she came to the University of Dundee to the Unit of Oral Surgery & Medicine in the School of Dentistry, where she has worked since providing invaluable support to teaching and clinical practice.

Mr Robin Walker, Director of Finance, will give a retirement presentation to Mrs Ann Bell at 4.30pm in the River Rooms, Floor Nine, Tower Building, University of Dundee.

Ann has worked for the University since September 1991. She Joined the Finance Office as Administrative Assistant in the Research Finance Office and became Manager of the section in 1996. During that period, research income to the University increased significantly and Ann becamea highly respected member of staff particularly with academic staff involved in research.
