Royal Visit to Gardyne's Land, Dundee's Oldest House

PRESS RELASE ISSUED ON BEHALF OF TAYSIDE BUILDING PRESERVATION TRUST

HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, will visit Gardyne's Land, one of Dundee's oldest historical landmarks, on Tuesday, 23rd September, to see the £4 million restoration project being undertaken by the Tayside Building Preservation Trust.

The Gardyne's Land project, in Dundee's High Street, is one of the most important urban conservation projects in Scotland. Three buildings group around an internal courtyard. Two face onto High Street one from the 17th  Century, the other from the 19th Century. The third property, at the rear, is a Merchant's House dating from 1560, first owned by John Gardyne.

This Merchant's House is the only survivor of the Merchant's and Noble Houses which existed in Dundee, when it was Scotland's second most important city. HRH is expected to spend an hour in Gardyne's Land, being shown around by Neil Grieve, the Preservation Trust's chief executive, and meeting those involved in developing the project. They will include members of the Preservation Trust's board, representatives from the bodies funding the project and members of the professional team implementing the project. Neil Grieve who is a lecturer in the University's School of Town and Regional Planning, where he is mainly concerned with the Urban Conservation post-graduate course, will also introduce past and present urban conservation students who helped develop the project.

Neil Grieve explained "Knowing HRH's concerns for historic buildings and their preservation, and initiatives involving young people,  the Tayside  Building Preservation Trust invited him to visit Gardyne's Land. It seemed to encompass so many of his interests.

It is the most important and historically significant urban conservation project happening in Scotland today. He will see the splendour of this long forgotten architectural gem and the care and precision which is going into restoring and preserving it for local, and international visitors to Dundee."
